THIS IS TOMORROW CALLING (Wishing you were here)
ALT-D is a digital platform created for, and by, Edinburgh College Art graduate students. Whilst ALT-D was founded in the absence of a physical degree show, we aim to exist as a collective for ECA alumni in the long-term future. We have established our group as a grassroots non-profit for emerging artists. With our long-awaited Degree Show being cancelled this year, we turned our attention to finding alternate ways of showcasing all the hard work and talent emerging from the 2020 graduates. As a small self-funded team, we have produced a website with over 100 students across 23 artistic disciplines. The members of Alt_D are thrilled to have partnered with Zembla to realise our first physical show, THIS IS TOMORROW CALLING (Wishing you were here), which includes the work by 68 graduates from a variety of specialisms. It has been a pleasure to work with Zembla, as they understood that at the centre of our project was a desire to create a platform that is democratic and celebrates all our graduates on an equal footing. This is why we decided against a selection based show and rather decided to occupy the space with high quality poster reproductions instead. Existing on paper, allowing the curation to become more flexible, dynamic and playful. Organised through visual links, the strict divisions between disciplines are removed, bringing about interesting groupings and new ways of considering the works on display. This way of visualising work also provides a response to the lack of physical access to the space many graduates have experienced due to COVID-19. This exhibition represents Alt_D’s ethos fully. We built this platform through sheer determination as students to do justice for our hard work and ultimately celebrate the talent of our graduating cohort. Increasing the accessibility of our work is a main aim of our collective, therefore, it felt apt to recreate our exhibit virtually to give you as close an experience as possible to the physical exhibition. Click on the posters to find the graduate's information and then head over to our website (www.alt-d.online) to find out more about their work!
